An International Driving Permit is not a legal condition for visitors driving in Saudi Arabia; your valid home licence is what the law asks for. The counter is a separate matter. Hire companies write their own document policies, and plenty of them ask for an IDP — most often when a licence is not written in English or Arabic and staff have no way to read the categories on it. An IDP is the UN-standard translation of the licence you already hold, which is exactly the gap it closes. Check the document policy attached to your booking, and treat an IDP as insurance against a dispute at pickup rather than as a legal obligation.

Women have been legally permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia since June 2018, and female visitors drive on a valid licence like anyone else. The same traffic rules apply regardless of gender. Carry your licence and passport at all times.

Drive on the Right
Saudi Arabia drives on the right side with left-hand-drive vehicles. Be cautious on desert highways where visibility can be reduced during sandstorms. High-beam headlight etiquette is important on long stretches.
Desert Highway Driving
Saudi Arabia has modern, well-maintained highways connecting major cities. Distances are vast — Riyadh to Jeddah is 950 km. Always carry extra water and keep your fuel tank above half. Sandstorms can reduce visibility to near zero.
Zero Alcohol Tolerance
Alcohol is completely prohibited in Saudi Arabia. There is zero tolerance for any alcohol consumption. Penalties are severe and can include imprisonment and deportation for all residents and visitors.
Speed Limits & Saher Cameras
Urban: 50–80 km/h. Highways: 120 km/h. Some expressways: 140 km/h. The Saher camera system is extensive and fines are issued automatically. Penalties start at SAR 300 and escalate with repeat offenses.
