Do You Need an IDP in Fiji?

Fiji accepts a valid foreign driving licence, so the law does not ask visitors for an International Driving Permit. The rental desk is the reason to carry one: counters at Nadi Airport and in Suva may ask for an IDP alongside your licence, and producing it there ends a conversation you would otherwise be having on the first morning of your trip. Fijian police do check documents at roadblocks, especially during holidays — your own licence is what they need to see.
Island Road Conditions
Fiji roads are generally narrow and winding, especially outside Suva and Nadi. Many bridges are single-lane. Speed bumps are common in villages. Watch for pedestrians, dogs, and horses. Roads can flood during tropical storms.

Drive on the Left
Fiji drives on the left with right-hand-drive vehicles. Roads on Viti Levu form a circuit around the coast. Interior roads are rough and may require 4x4. Give way to oncoming traffic at single-lane bridges.
Viti Levu Circuit
The Kings Road (north) and Queens Road (south) form a circuit around Viti Levu, the main island. The full loop is approximately 500 km. Both roads are paved but narrow with scenic coastal and mountain sections.
Village Etiquette
Drive slowly through villages (30 km/h). Fijian villages have their own speed bumps and pedestrians walk on the road. Honking is considered rude near villages. Alcohol limit is 0.08%. Night driving is risky.

Urban: 50 km/h. Open roads: 80 km/h. Villages: 30–40 km/h. Road conditions vary — the Queens Road is generally better maintained. Heavy rain causes flooding and landslides. Single-lane bridges are common.
