Police (Policía Nacional) run checkpoints on major routes and will look at your licence and passport together — an IDP presents your licence in a form they can read.
Key Warning
The Pan-American Highway runs through Ecuador's Avenue of Volcanoes, passing between Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. The road is well-paved but climbs to over 4,000m. Sudden fog and rain can reduce visibility to near zero at higher elevations.

Ecuador drives on the right. The Pan-American Highway (E35) is the main north-south corridor. Mountain roads feature sharp switchbacks and steep grades.
Andes Roads
Roads through the Andes wind between volcanoes at 3,000–4,500m. Guardrails are often absent. Landslides during rainy season (October–May) can block roads for hours.
Pan-American Highway
The E35 runs from Colombia to Peru through Ecuador. Main sections are well-maintained dual carriageway. Toll plazas accept cash only.
Speed Limits
Urban: 50 km/h. Rural: 90 km/h. Highway: 120 km/h. Radar cameras are common on the E35 and around Quito.
